Most vehicles are used every day or at least several times a week. With that much wear on a car or truck, it's inevitable that some of the parts may eventually wear out. For this reason, we started this blog to inform you about vehicle parts that often need to be replaced. We aren't auto mechanics or car specialists, but we do drive cars and we wanted to become knowledgeable about the various car parts and components that typically wear out. After doing our research, we decided to share our information with others to help prevent breakdowns and expensive repairs. By reading our blog posts you'll learn which auto parts including the alternator, fuel pump, and brake components you should periodically check to make sure they're still functioning properly.

Your car or truck has some parts that will wear out over time, and these parts are often critical to the vehicle's operation. The exhaust system includes several of these parts, and eventually, it will get loud and need a muffler service so that a mechanic can inspect the system to make the proper repairs.
Exhaust System Wear
You may wonder how the exhaust system on your car can wear out over time, so it is vital to understand how it works. The exhaust system in your vehicle carries hot exhaust gases from the engine through the catalytic converter. The gases then go through the muffler to the tailpipe and out from under the vehicle.
The gases are hot as they exit the engine, and they begin to cool as they flow through the system, allowing the production of condensation inside the exhaust system. Over time the condensation settles as water pockets in low spots of the system, causing rust and rot from the inside out. Once a hole develops, your muffler service tech will have to replace the part of the system where the hole has formed.
Exhaust System Inspections
When you suspect there is a leak in the exhaust system on your vehicle, you can take it to an exhaust system service shop and have the technician do a complete inspection of the entire system for you. Some telltale signs of a leak include soot around joints in the system, loud exhaust, and rattling and banging sounds under the car that could indicate a loose mount on the pipe or muffler.
The exhaust system service tech will put the car on a lift and check the entire system for you and let you know if there is damage that needs to be repaired. You may need to replace the muffler, but the rest of the pipes may be fine, or the entire system may need to be replaced due to rust and neglect over the years.
Making Repairs
When the inspection is complete, the muffler repair tech will replace the damaged parts in the system for you. Replacing the muffler is common, and if the exhaust system is clamped together, it is a simple repair. Factory exhaust systems are often welded at the joints for strength and durability, but that means the tech will need to cut the old muffler out to replace it.
The tech will most likely install the new muffler with clamps so it is easier to repair or replace later, but some shops will weld the new one in place if you prefer. Once installed, the new muffler should last a few years, but you might need a tailpipe or other part of the system down the road if you did not replace the rest of the system.
